Vroom Vroom! Tips & Positions for Having Car Sex
Sex should be spontaneous, and we all have different libidos that drive our desires. We’re all familiar with the comfort of a traditional bedroom setting. But have you ever found yourself wanting or practically needing to have car sex?
The urge to pounce on your partner may arise at any time. Maybe you’re trying to catch them off guard and do something especially spicy by suggesting car sex while you’re on a road trip together. Perhaps you’re vibing with a potential hookup but both sets of parents are home, leaving you no choice but to get your freak on in the backseat.
Car sex can make for a fun and unexpected way to get off. But since your freedom of movement is somewhat limited, it can also be a bit tricky. We’re going to give you some tips on how to have car sex and maximize pleasure. We’ll also discuss some of the car sex positions that might make things easier and more navigable for you and your partner, plus how using lube and sex toys can help the cause.
Is Car Sex Common?
Having sex in a car might seem uncomfortable or unconventional. But the reality is that car sex is fairly common.
A 2016 survey of 706 students (195 men and 511 women) at a small Midwest college found that over 60% of respondents had sex in a parked car. Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, most respondents (56.95) reported that they had car sex with a relational dating partner as opposed to a casual hookup. Or, as we might call it, a “sneaky link.” Conversely, 14% of the respondents who reported having car sex noted that they lost their virginity in a parked car.
Now, this is a relatively small sample size. Still, people seem to see the value in a car quickie and don’t seem to have many reservations about car sex. It seems as decent an option as any for sexual partners who don’t live together, and even people who are just having sex for the first time.
What is the Appeal of Car Sex?
Perhaps the most straightforward appeal of car sex is that, if you do it in a secluded location, it minimizes the chance for people to walk in on you. That means you don’t have to risk the embarrassment of your mom or little brother walking in. College students might find that car sex is the best chance for physical intimacy if they have a roommate who spends most of their hours in the dormitory.
The other appeal? Well, it can make for quite the departure from your standard bedroom setting. Maybe you and your partner find yourselves overlooking a picturesque mountain peak during a hiking trip when the mood arises. That mountain might not be the only thing getting climbed.
A car quickie might quench your sexual thirst. Or maybe it’s a good way for you and your partner to try something new and check an item off your sex bucket list. Regardless, knowing how to have car sex, especially in a small-sized sedan, can have a bit of a learning curve. Fortunately for you, we’re here to lend a hand—no, not that kind of hand, that’s your partner’s job.
How to Have Car Sex
Car sex can make for a tight fit, both literally and figuratively. You want to have an idea of what you can do to make things intimate and comfortable from a spatial perspective. Here are some general tips for how to have sex in a car:
Know Your Laws: The act of having sex in a car is not illegal. However, you should know that you and your partner could put yourselves at risk of indecent exposure or lewd conduct laws. These laws vary from state to state, so it’s important to know the severity and always, ALWAYS seek out a private place where you likely will not be seen.
Find a Discreet Spot: So, what might be a more private location for having sex in a car? You might find an empty parking lot is what you need. That could be late at night at your local shopping mall or grocery store after they close early. Maybe there’s a lot by a park district that’s also closed early in the evening. Perhaps it’s a rest stop or spot by a cliff that’s mostly deserted. No matter where you choose, assure you and your partner have some privacy before, ahem, kicking into gear.
Pick Comfortable Sex Positions: We’ll get into this in greater detail shortly, but some sex positions are easier to pull off during car sex than others. The positions you choose may also be determined by other factors. This includes, most notably, the kind of car you have (sedan, SUV, truck) and how much room you have in the front and back seats. But the sex positions you choose might also be determined in part by your ability, or lack thereof, to move or fold down seatbacks to give yourself some more freedom of movement.
Don’t Forget About Oral: Even if you’re in a time crunch and looking to get off quickly or need to have car sex because your options are limited, you should still incorporate at least some elements of foreplay. That includes giving oral sex, which might also prove slightly easier and, in some situations, perhaps more discreet than intercourse. Your partner might even prefer to give and/or receive oral sex. Plus, oral sex can help increase the excitement and get you or your partner wet and ready for penetration.
Lube is Essential: Lubricant helps decrease friction and make penetration easier. It can also help reduce condom breakage. Both of those benefits matter that much more during car sex, when time can be of the essence, and trying to find the best fit can, at times, be a little awkward. You can try Trojan™ Infinite Glide— a smooth long-lasting lubricant that is unscented, non-sticky, and mess free. Some lubricants, like Trojan™ Arouses and Intensifies™, have added heating or cooling sensations that can enhance the tingles and pleasure. If you’re incorporating sex toys during car sex, use a water-based lubricant such as Trojan™ H20 Closer.
Sex Toys for Added Stimulation: Adding some vibrations during foreplay or intercourse can help get you or your partner closer to the checkered flag, er, finish line. Sex toys can help increase the chances for orgasm, which should be the end goal whether you’re having sex in a car or the bedroom. Learn more about using sex toys with a partner and get ready to start your engines. You might even find a 2-in-1 couples sex toy, like the Trojan™ Dual Pleasure Vibrating Wand, that can help both partners get off simultaneously.
Use Your Surroundings: We briefly mentioned folding down seatbacks. If you have a truck, you might lay out a blanket and other items so you can have sex in the truck bed. For something a little spicier, you can hump on the hood of the car. Or, try opening a door. An open door can allow at least one partner to stand during sex and can offer the additional space you may need to feel that much more comfortable. Just remember to make sure you’re in a discreet location where nobody will see or hear you if you decide to have sex in a truck bed, on the hood, or with an open door.
It might also be a good idea to turn on the air conditioning or at least turn it on periodically to keep you both cool. And don’t forget to stay protected by wearing a condom! Note that you should NOT store condoms in the car. Car interiors go through extreme temperature fluctuations through the seasons. Those fluctuations can damage condoms. As a general rule of thumb: avoid storing condoms where they will have exposure to direct sunlight or for prolonged periods at temperatures above 100°F.
Best Car Sex Positions
Now that you’ve completed your car sex “driver’s ed,” it’s time to talk about the best car sex positions for fit and comfort. As previously discussed, some sexual partners may be able to expand their horizons if they have a larger vehicle or use the car hood or bed of a truck. Still, the following positions are universal and especially handy if you’re figuring out how to have sex in a small car:
Cowgirl: Taking your partner for a ride can be both intimate and fun. One partner sits in the driver, passenger, or back seat. The other partner gets on top and straddles the seated partner, facing them directly. Cowgirl offers eye contact and control for the partner on the top. You might also see whether you can recline your seat to give your partner more room to bounce up and down or shake their ass(ets) while they ride you.
Reverse Cowgirl: The reverse cowgirl position is the same as cowgirl, except the straddling partner faces the other direction. This variation might be a slightly more difficult car sex position if the vehicle has lower ceilings. But you can bring your partner tighter to your chest and hold their legs underneath the thighs. Alternatively, sliding closer to the edge of the seat may provide your partner the extra space they need to bump and grind on you. If you’re in the back seat, your partner might also bend over the main console and ride you in reverse.
Missionary: This is one of the more straightforward car sex positions. It’s a staple sex position for any occasion, really. Best for the back seat, missionary involves the receiving partner lying flat on their back and the penetrating partner on top of them. In addition to offering physical closeness and intimacy, this position may be slightly more “out of sight” than others since both partners are lying flat.
Seashell: The seashell sex position is a variation of missionary that requires a little bit of flexibility and athleticism. In seashell, the receiving partner lies on their back and holds their legs up so their ankles are close to their shoulders, with the penetrating partner again entering them from the top. Seashell is ideal for deep penetration and may provide easier access to the G-spot. It could also be preferable if the penetrating partner is taller and cramped for space, just so long as the receiving partner is comfortable and capable of making this car sex position work.
Spider: The spider sex position is a kinkier variation of cowgirl. The penetrating partner faces the receiving partner and sits at a 45-degree angle with their legs up and their knees bent. The receiving partner wraps their legs around the penetrator’s torso, leaning back and using the arms for support. This gives the receiving partner a chance to ride, but the penetrating partner can also put in the work and thrust from the “bottom.”
Sideways (Side Spooning): Side spooning might be a difficult car sex position for taller or wider couples, especially if you’re lacking back seat space. However, it offers ample physical closeness and allows you and your partner to switch things up from missionary should you both choose. The receiving partner can also lift their legs higher or move their torso around to change the penetration angle.
Doggy Style: Is someone honking or are you giving your partner bomb backshots? Like missionary, doggy style is a classic sex position that offers ample pleasure benefits. Unlike missionary, however, you can put more spins on doggy style as a car sex position. For example, you can get in the back seat and have your partner grab the side door while you penetrate them from the back. If your car is roomy enough, you might be able to bend them over the main console. Alternatively, you can open a door and stand while bending them over the door opening.
Finding the best car sex position is all about fit and comfort. So experiment with different positions and communicate with your partner about what feels good or if there’s a need to switch things up.
